Photographer Spotlight: Carolyn Monastra

written by: Tyler Sutherland

Carolyn Monastra is full of adventure and an outstanding photographer. We are excited to share her portfolio, along with a peek into life outside of shooting weddings. Take a look at her interview!

headshots - Carolyn Monastra of Christian Oth Studio

Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio

Years in NYC: 18

Outside of Christian Oth Studio, how do you spend your free time?

Traveling when and where I can. I recently returned from a nine-month around-the-world trip where I was photographing landscapes affected by climate change. Needles to say, it was a life-altering experience. I met so many amazing people and got introduced to a variety of cultures. In the city, I enjoy going to art exhibits, concerts or movies, riding my bicycle around Brooklyn, doing yoga, swimming, and reading.

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

From the time I was nine or ten I always remember taking pictures with a little plastic camera. I became a devotee when I got my first 35mm camera for my 15th birthday and my father set-up a darkroom in our basement. I started taking photography classes for high-school students that same year at the Cleveland Institute of Art. At Fordham University, even though I was an English Literature major, I kept taking photo classes and a couple years later I was accepted at the Yale School of Art and received my Masters of Fine Art in Photography.

What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

Almonds! They are the perfect power food to get me through the day. But more importantly, I bring my relaxed nature and sense of humor. I think there can often be some stress on the day of the wedding and I keep a light-hearted attitude to put people at ease. I was a social worker for my first few years out of college and I think that training allows me to deal easily with all kinds of people and situations. It also helps that I come from a large family (one of 23 cousins) so I am energized by the activity of big events.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

It’s hard to pick just one isolated moment but I do love the activity of the bride (and the groom too) getting-ready. There is a heightened sense of anticipation – both nervousness and excitement – in the air. I love the unexpected tender moments that can happen between family and friends during those hours before the ceremony. I feel privileged to be a witness to those moments.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing?

Maybe I would be a pastry chef. I enjoy baking breads and sweets and seeing the expression on people’s faces when they eat them. (Which is why I also enjoy the cake-cutting at weddings.)

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

Antarctica. I had the pleasure of going there last year and it was a photographer’s dream-scape. The light was ever-changing and the landscape is breath-taking. I am lucky to be going with the Arctic with same expedition company this summer as their artist-in-residence. So if anyone wants to plan a destination at one of the Poles, then I'm your gal!

Where do you find inspiration?

In New York City there are so many places; in the streets, the parks, and restaurants. I enjoy observing people’s gestures and the way they interact with one another – especially young couples in love. I have recently become a fan of the social media sites Pinterest and Instagram because I like the surprise of seeing what other people are looking at on the web and out in their daily lives.

What is your most memorable New York moment?

That’s a tough call. Having lived here for so many years, I have many. I do remember one stormy summer night when I was attending a concert downtown. I had to fight strong pre-storm winds just walking to the venue. But when the concert was over and the crowd spilled outside, we were treated to the most glorious sky filled with cotton-ball shaped clouds. In awe, everyone pulled out their cameras while exclaiming how we’d never seen such clouds. A few months later, I was doing an engagement shoot with a couple and the groom happened to pull out his phone to show me some pictures he'd taken. It turns out, they has also had seen that magnificent sky from another location in the city. It was a great New York bonding moment!

Photographer Spotlight: Jack Jeffries

written by: Tyler Sutherland

Next up is our newest emerging photographer, Jack Jeffries! He is all about adventure, traveling and music. Read more in his interview below! - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

Hometown: Sacramento, California

Outside of Christian Oth Studio, how do you spend your free time?

Well, aside from spending time with my lovely wife and my new puppy Bruce, I love
adventures. Whether it’s going on an 80 mile cycling trip, hiking in the catskills or taking the train to DC just because, I love jumping into the unknown.  I’m also a percussionist and enjoy going for walks in the snow.

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

When I was in my early 20’s I was fortunate enough to tour the United States and Europe playing drums in a punk rock band.  When you’re in Arizona one day, Chicago another, and London the next, you can’t help but take little snaps here and there.  Some were of friends, others were of landmarks and the silly antics of my travelling companions.  Now I wish I could say that these photos were taken with a vintage rangefinder film camera, and that I fell in love with not just taking pictures but the process of bringing still images from exposure to print.  That’s not what happened.  My camera was a tiny little 1.9 MP Nikon Coolpix 800 digital camera.  I loved the simplicity and immediacy of the Coolpix and helped me learn the basics very quickly giving me surprisingly amazing results.   At this point I was already hooked on photography but it wasn’t until I got a hold of a real camera that I knew this was something to pursue.

Jim, one of the guitarists in my band was a big photo enthusiast.  Along with all of his music gear he would travel with a giant photo bag that would have everything from a 4X5, to a DSLR with many lenses and an xray proof bag full of film.  On an off day in Italy, he and I we were hiking through the hills of Cinque Terre when we stopped so Jim could set up a shot with his 4X5.  I asked if I could take some shots with his 35mm.  I had never picked up a 35mm camera before so I was a little confused by the buttons and dials.  As soon as I looked through the viewfinder and heard the first smack of that shutter I was sold.  It probably wasn’t until late that night that my friend was able to pry it from my hands.

What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

Like any good boy scout my motto is Be Prepared.  Whether shooting weddings, landscapes or portraits I always do a lot of research before a shoot.  I check the weather, research the location, review references, check sunrise/sunset, and basically have as much information as I can about the environment.  All of this information helps me plan what I will shoot and anticipate the shooting conditions. Minimizing the variables in a shoot allows me to focus on bringing the very best out of my subject.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing?

Yikes, that’s a tough one.  I feel like I’ve already done so many things.  I was semester away from becoming a mechanical engineer, spent 6 years as a touring musician, and now I’m a photographer.  To start, it would have to be a career where I’m able to travel.  I’m a people person so a job with a lot of social interaction is a must.  I’m spontaneous so any sort of schedule wouldn’t do.  Lot’s of free time for my wife and my dog Bruce. I guess I’d be...a man of leisure.

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

New places are always exciting to shoot.  I could be in sleepy Evansville, Indiana or on top of the Swiss Alps.  Both new to me and just as exciting to shoot.  Living in New York City, there is an endless list of things and places to shoot.  But sometimes, exciting city life becomes normal.  After living here for over 7 years, I’ve found myself walking all day without being inspired to shoot one thing.  On the other hand I could go to a tiny town upstate where I’ve never been and spend all day shooting on one block.  The unfamiliar, more often than not, is my favorite place to shoot.

Where do you find inspiration?

I’m always looking to my peers for inspiration.  It’s one thing to look at the master’s like Eggelston or Penn and say, “They are amazing, but how can I do that?”  However I find when looking to my peers I'm inspired by something that’s attainable.  When photographers that I know personally try new techniques or WOW me with a new project it really pushes me to continue creating. I thinks it's so important to have a community for inspiration and criticism while growing as an artist.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

What moved me the most when I first started shooting weddings were the moments of spontaneity sprinkled throughout the day.  Weddings are a beautiful thing but they couldn’t work without a schedule.  This schedule ensures that everything that is supposed to happen, happens.  Fortunately, there a several moments in a wedding that aren’t planned.  Like grandma's amazement when walking in to see the bride just after getting ready.  Or the expressions on bride and groom when they realize, while in midair, that maybe jumping in the pool wasn’t such a good idea.  These amazingly spontaneous moments make it such a joy to shooting weddings.

What is your most memorable New York moment?

Well it is a little cheesy, but my wife and I held the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man hot air balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  The day started out a little early.  We had to wake up at 3:00 am, go to The New Yorker hotel and put on what looked like sanitation worker jumpsuits.  After standing in the cold for a few hours we got “balloon handler” training and got in line with the rest of the balloons.  By this time I was sure I would never do this again.  But as soon as we turned down broadway I realized something; I am walking down the middle of broadway, holding a 4 story balloon, with thousands of people cheering along with millions on TV, this is incredible!

Photographer Spotlight: Kirra Cheers

written by: Tyler Sutherland

Our first emerging photographer is Kirra Cheers, who has been named one of Rangefiner's 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography. Take a look into her interview!

 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

Hometown: Adelaide, Australia

Outside of Christian Oth Studio how do you spend your time?

If there is a passion for me that rivals photography it is travel. Outside of the studio I run a travel blog that documents my adventures. I love that New York is so central and I am looking forward to seeing South America and the northern lights of Canada. I also take salsa dance classes. Salsa keeps me fit and healthy and is a whole lot of fun.

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

I enrolled in a photography class at school. I still have the very first roll of black and white film I took. All the kids in my class handed in one photo each from my roll of film. We all got A’s – that was the first time I thought I might have a future in photography.

If you were not a photographer what would you be doing?

During school I had a music scholarship. It was always expected I would finish school and study at the conservatorium.  I found photography and eventually I had to make a choice between the two. It was an easy choice; photography is my passion and has always come first.

What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

Many of my brides have become friends that I still keep in contact with to this day. I like to think that people feel comfortable around me. Getting your photo taken should be a fun experience where you can relax, enjoy the company of those you love, and feel confident that your photographer is capturing you at your natural best.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

I love the moment, when the ceremony has finished and friends and family come to congratulate the bride and groom. I filter through the crowd capturing moments of unbridled joy and emotion. All the nerves and tension of preparing for the day are over and the happy couple can relax and enjoy the moment.

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

I would love to photograph a wedding in the Greek Islands. I love the clear, clean colors and stark architecture. I also have dreams of hiring a sailboat and exploring the islands.

Where do you find inspiration?

I really believe in feeding your creative mind. I enjoy all art forms from music to cinematography - there is always something I can learn and apply to my photography. Lately I have been watching a lot of Scorsese films. The way he frames each scene is so moody, each frame tells a story.

What is your most memorable New York moment?

Not long after I arrived in New York, I went for a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a warm summers night and the lights of Manhattan were sparkling on the water. It was one of those moments I had to pinch myself to make sure it wasn’t a dream. I was here – I had finally made it to New York.

THE EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS PROGRAM

written by: Christian Oth

As you can see, all our photographers at the studio have one thing in common: great talent and a personality that goes with it. Every photographer at the studio is highly trained, motivated and has lots of experience.

Wonder what it takes to become a photographer for us in the first place? How do we recruit, train and mentor great talent? There are many schools out there of course, but a new photographer must gather experience in the field and at times it takes many years until someone is ready.

At the studio we have exact standards to manage expectations, whilst giving the photographer creative freedom to further his or her own vision. This is truly important, because we have an over-arching “studio style” which has developed quite naturally over the years. Then, each photographer has their own style within that umbrella - so different visions and personalities form their own eclectic mix.

 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

So, how do we then foster new talent?

At most weddings, we bring a team of a lead photographer, a second photographer and an assistant. All of our lead photographers were second photographers for a good while. There is usually quite a bit of training, feedback etc. before we let a photographer take on his or her own weddings.

Every now and then we feel someone is ready, but it’s a big step from second photographer to being a lead and shooting a wedding at the Plaza with 300 guests. Enter our “Emerging Photographers Program."

It is specifically designed to ease our great new hot talent into photographing fantastic weddings. As we offer our emerging photographers at introductory rates, we are looking for weddings that are creative and will greatly enhance the photographer’s portfolio.

Right now we have Kirra Cheers and Jack Jeffries in our program. Click here to view their portfolios. In the coming days we have interviews prepared with these emerging photographers to show what makes them tick!

Photographer Spotlight: Glen Allsop

written by: Tyler Sutherland
Isn't his portfolio stunning? Learn more about the life of Glen Allsop in his Q&A below.
 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

Hometown: Williamsburg-slash-Sydney, Australia

Years in NYC: 2 years

Outside of Christian Oth Studio, how do you spend your free time?

I wander the streets of Manhattan looking for elements that might make for interesting photographs... blog them... drink coffee... ride my bike... laugh with my wife...

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

I started shooting several years ago when my dad had some health complications that affected his sight and his memory. Because of this, I became interested in photography as a means of creating memories and seeing the world.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing?

I'd be one of those people who you're not exactly sure what they do, but they are always doing something. Like a count, or a mysterious philanthropist that spends copious amounts of time drinking fine coffee and even finer 18 year single malt scotch.

What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

A well-tailored suit! No excuse not to look sharp.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

I think sometimes I get more excited by the light as opposed to a particular moment. I LOVE the genuine heartfelt moments, definitely, but watching the light and the atmosphere that dictates, fascinates me. I love whatever is happening around the last hour of light. It might be an outdoor ceremony with a setting sun creeping through the trees, soft romantic portraits of guests at cocktail hour... It could be the table details lightly backlit by the afternoon glow, or if things are timed just right, it could be a private moment between the bride and groom as they take a breath and reflect on their day.

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

Give me a barn in a field or some piece of ocean anywhere. Better yet, an oceanside barn in a field.

Where do you find inspiration?

This varies. Sometimes it is looking through other photographers work, seeing the way that they have captured and conveyed something unique. Other times it is when the elements are out of my control, but something stunning gets handed to me in a way I hadn't imagined. It's all about light. Recently in Wyoming, the sun was setting behind the mountains and the light started cascading down, creating a soft golden haze against the cool blue layers of the mountain side. It was truly epic and inspiring.

What is your most memorable New York moment?

New York has served so many memorable moments it is hard to nail down to "most" memorable. The first that comes to mind is a few weeks ago when I suddenly realized that the three men standing around me in the subway were undercover policemen and that the gentleman sitting next to me looking longingly at my camera was actually wearing handcuffs. I love New York.

I thought it would be fitting to share with you a fireworks image from a wedding that I recently photographed in Ravello on the Amalfi Coast. The display literally brought the village to life by using the lower part of Ravello to stage the show. It was a truly scenic spectacle with the most incredible backdrop.

A Behind the Scenes Look of the Canon Campaign

written by: Christian Oth
Here is the video of Behind the Scenes footage where I'm talking a bit about how I got the shots and how I used the 1Dx.

Funny thing is: what it doesn't show in the video is how this was one of the hottest days of the year. As we were photographing the couple on Madison Avenue and in Central Park I called my friend Emily at the Plaza and she opened up the Oak room for us so we could cool down and also get some extra shots. This worked out great as one of the things I wanted to highlight about the camera is its low light capability and there was very little light in the room. Have a look.

Thank you to Ruben Collado for shooting this amazing video. Ruben, you really came through. Also a big thanks to Shawn Connell, Mike Falco and Glen Allsop. You were an amazing team!

I loved working with the amazing people from Dentsu. A special shout out goes to Bruno Corbo, Katy Wright, Andrew Zinker and Jean Wolff (We've been through a lot, ha!)

Also, Andi from my studio kept us nourished and made sure the wedding stayed a real wedding. We had to strike a fine balance between keeping this advertising shoot real and not to disturb the actual wedding.

4PM UPDATE: Here is the second behind-the-scenes video we shot, which is all about the 5D Mark III.

The Canon Campaign

written by: Christian Oth
This summer Canon approached me to be shoot a campaign of their newly launched EOS 5D Mark III camera and their flagship EOS-1Dx as well as their Speedlite system. They tapped me as the face to highlight the new features of the cameras while showcasing my skills behind the scenes, within the studio and while on location for one of our client's weddings.

 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

When Canon came to me, I loved that they wanted the promotion to be completely authentic. It would have been so much easier to hire models and stage these shots, but Canon insisted on using images from a real wedding. So these photose were done in real time and truly represented the honest moments of the day and made the final campaign a joy to be apart of. This came to be a great representation of our work and how well the cameras and equipment handle real world circumstances such as indoor/outdoor lighting changes and the quick movement of the wedding day.

If you're a photographer you've probably already seen these photos in various magazines. Here are some of the ads from the wedding.
 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

A special thank you Tess and Rohan for letting us photograph their amazing wedding and to Angie Nevarez of Baton NYC for her amazing planning skills and ability to help make this incredible opportunity come to fruition

Tomorrow I'll share the video of how we got to shoot those moments, so stay tuned!

Photographer Spotlight: Guy Calaf

written by: Tyler Sutherland
Following the release of his beautiful portfolio yesterday, here is a further look into the life of photographer Guy Calaf!
by Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

Hometown: I was raised between New York and Italy

Years in NYC: On and off, all of my life

Outside of Christian Oth Studio, how do you spend your free time?

I am a full time photographer and full time father. Outside of Christian Oth Studio, I take care of my beautiful one year old daughter Adele Elizabeth and dating my wife- these days, mostly in front of home cooked dinners. I run a production company that specialized in non fiction projects and I'm currently working on a film on the American involvement in Afghanistan. I love to practice yoga, run and road cycle. And I try to read at least two hours a day, mostly non fiction.

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

I always loved the arts and spent most of my vacations in high school and college walking through exhibitions, galleries and museums. I stumbled into photojournalism and documentary photography in 2001, while I still had two years to go in college, studying communication science. I felt it was a way to connect people by highlighting our sense of humanity, especially in our darkest places, at our most difficult times. So, I enrolled in a photo school and started preparing myself to become a photojournalist. In 2003 I went to Iraq and I haven't stopped since
.
What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

Photography is to me somewhat secondary, as strange as it sounds. I am a humanist. I love people, their connections. I love to feel and to represent their emotions. Photography allows me to do just that. I'd say that if there was a camera bag with my most important tools, they would be: empathy, understanding, an open mind, compassion, awareness, attention, love.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing?

I ask myself that quite often. I think I'd be a doctor. Perhaps an ER specialist. I am the biggest fan of the work of Doctors Without Boarders ( MSF ) and all the other organizations that send medical staff in tragic situations.

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

I wake up every morning in my favorite place to shoot. That is besides my wife and near my daughter. I would not change that with anywhere else in the world.

Where do you find inspiration?

Life inspires me. In all its forms. I will always be its student. I love to read and look at art. In our overwhelmingly  hectic lifestyles, experiencing other people's visions is where I find the space to reflect on mine.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

That is a difficult question. I think that for me it changes from wedding to wedding. It really depends on the people I'm photographing. It is definitely a spontaneous moment that I have the privilege to document. But it is also a sense of fulfillment from having successfully represented the intensity and the love between the couple and the people they care about.

What is your most memorable New York moment?

I had the privilege of being an assignment photographer for the New York Times working for all its local sections, from the Metro Section to the Arts, Dining, the City Blog, the Nocturnalist,  Real Estate... That gave me the opportunity to develop a very personal and intimate relationship with the city. To me, the amazing thing about New York is that it really is about its people. New Yorkers make and define New York. This constant awareness is perhaps the strongest feeling I have about the city.

Photographer Spotlight: Michael Falco

written by: Tyler Sutherland
With the release of his stunning portfolio yesterday, I know you want to see more of  Mike Falco! Today we have his brilliance captured in a few short questions!.
 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

Outside of Christian Oth Studio, how do you spend your free time?

I have many interests; music, guitar, cooking, and fly fishing, but my free time these days are filled working on personal photography projects involving pinhole cameras.

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

I discovered photography while on a trip with friends many years ago. A friend brought a camera along and I couldn't get it out of my hands for the entire trip. I had never really played with a camera before and I was smitten from the moment I put the viewfinder to my eye. Within a couple years, I was working at a newspaper. That was twenty two years ago. Since then, I have published two books and have worked for a number of magazines including the National Geographic, Harper's Bazaar and W Magazine. Much of my time has been spent as a photojournalist and I  continue to freelance for newspapers such as NY Times, the Globe & Mail in Toronto, and The National in the United Arab Emirates.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing?

Race car driver.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere. I have many interests and am generally a curious person. I find inspiration in looking deeply into a subject, be it a news story, a profile/portrait of a person, studying a landscape, or a wedding day.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

I love storytelling. In storytelling, all the moments are important. They all add up to a complete work of art, but I would say, the candid getting-ready portion of the day and the ritual are my favorites. As a journalist, I like the more elaborate ceremonies, religious rituals, and the actual public bonding of the couple. I have photographed many weddings and I am still frequently moved to tears during these moments.

What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

In a word, experience. Years as a photojournalist has taught me when and where to stand, to get "the photo," and to accomplish this in a subtle and sensitive way. It allows me to move through what is a long, shot filled day, with ease.

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

I am very fond of the desert. The simple unending landscapes are so different from the visual chaos of my home town, New York CIty. I take trips to the California's Death Valley and Mohave deserts from time to time.

Lastly, what is your most memorable New York moment?

I have lived and worked in this City my entire career, so there are many. I'll just mention a recent one. While arriving with a bridal party at Central Parks Conservatory gardens, none other then famous NY Times photographer Bill Cunningham is waiting at the gate. I had invited him, with consent of the couple, to tag along on our brief shoot in the gardens. A total added thrill for the couple, it's not everyday you have your wedding documented by a legend. Oh, yeah, there was that time I found myself at a private party in Gramercy sharing a drink and conversation with Mick Jagger and George Plimpton, that was cool.

Mike's Obsession: The Pinhole Camera

written by: Tyler Sutherland
What does Mike Falco love to do when not shooting for Christian Oth Studio? Capture the essence of the pinhole camera. You are in for a treat!

Okay Mike, tell us about your hobby-

About three years ago, after years of shooting exclusively digital, I felt like I needed to slow down.

I wanted to trade, at least occasionally, the ease, precision, and instant gratification of digital photography for something that required me to spend more time with my subjects, to really immerse myself in the meaning and composition of each frame.

I was missing the mystery of photography, the magic that happens in the box.

I wanted to put some of the guesswork and intuition back into my image making.

The pinhole images you see here are the result.

Nantucket Fog- Michael Falco - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

(click on the image above to view more)

The pinhole camera is the most rudimentary camera one can photograph with: a simple black box with no lens, no viewfinder, no shutter. Just a pinhole to let light in and film in the back of the box to capture the light and record the image.

They can be made out of a shoebox.

To shoot with a pinhole camera is, quite literally, to get back to basics.

At first it sounds like a novelty, and I suppose it is, but in the best meaning of the word - something fresh and original. All the better is that it is also a throwback to something more primitive, painstaking, and pure.

What I did not anticipate is that stripping back to this most basic method of shooting would somehow yield images that also seemed more elemental, that brought me back to an earlier, uncluttered, more innocent way of seeing.

It reminds me of when I was child, sitting in the back seat of my parents car, looking out the window. The world flies by, you take in only little slices of life, fleeting images that nonetheless fill your head with wonder, questions, and stories spun from your own imagination. They are images that remain embedded in the mind’s eye, and one upon the next, become the iconography of deepest memory.

On beholding a pinhole image, I am once again that child, laying on my back on the grass, imagining and reimagining a world, the universe, in the puff and billow of the clouds.

Pinhole images are at once panoramic and dreamy. Everything is in focus, but that focus is uniformly soft, even gauzy, capturing not just what’s before you, not just a particular pinpoint in time, but an image deepened by the creep of time, the stirring of the wind, the rotation of the Earth. It lends the photos a timeless quality, an emotional sweep.

Where digital photography is like great nonfiction, pinhole photography somehow has the emotional honesty subjective truth of the novel. Each photograph carries with it a story, or many different stories. Just as it took more time to make, it can take more time to take in.

They are images that can make you pause, slow down, and think about the world.

They are photos you can simply stare at, melt into and muse on.

They are daydreams. They are meditations. They are an attempt to record archetypes of the collective unconscious.

Amazing, right? Mike is currently working with pinhole cameras in a new ongoing project to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War.

Portfolio Series XLV

written by: Christian Oth

To continue with our portfolio series, I'd like to head off with this image by Glen Allsop. This gem caught my focus last week; I just love the beauty in the softness of it. The lack of focus is more of an "accident," even a flaw. But, it is on purpose that we put this photo in the top selects of this particular wedding.

Photographer Spotlight: Shawn Connell

written by: Tyler Sutherland
The light is shining on the incredibly talented  Shawn Connell. After the release of his outstanding portfolio yesterday, here he shares insight into his own world of photography.
 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio

Hometown: Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia

Years in NYC: 8

Outside of Christian Oth Studio, how do you spend your free time?

There are so many things I love to do. I constantly travel. I shoot many many destination weddings and make it a point to explore the countries and cultures. I have been to many exciting places in the US and have seen spots I would have never dreamt of seeing. Other places include Tuscany, Lake Como, Dublin and the Irish countryside, Istanbul, Denmark, Italy, Paris, Ireland, and I always love going back to Oz (that's Australia, for you...). I work on my own personal photography, in fact, the reason I love working with Christian is the freedom and flexibility I have to pursue my own art. Every other year I fly out to Tonga (which is the farthest place away from New York) where I have an ongoing photo project of shooting humpback whales on the water.

Apart from photography, I am very interested in architecture. I just recently completed a project I have have been working on over the last two years with many of my architect friends. We drew up plans and created an unusual cabin in the woods next to a waterfall and swimming hole in Catskills. This completes the other side of me; I love having it as a retreat away from the City.

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

At the age of 15, I received a Pentax K1000 from my dad. From that point on, I could not stop taking pictures. I had the opportunity to do a range of things that improved and widened my photography skill. I made underwater houses for my cameras, traveled around the world several times as a photographer on a cruise line, and then opened my own photography business in Australia before moving to New York.

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

There is no simple answer to this. I have shot in really diverse places and I accept each place as a new challenge. I love to shoot in the French countryside or around Tuscany, but then I love the glamor of a New York wedding in the fall.

What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

First off I bring years of experience, where no matter what happens, I'll know how to react to any given situation. The second thing I bring is my calm and happy mannerism. Great energy from a photographer is of the upmost importance on your wedding day. I also bring a vision of beauty that I have acquired while growing as a photographer. There are so many photojournalistic moments. Everyone wants to be more beautiful. You have to find someone who can do that and know how.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

There is definitely not just one, there are many throughout the day. Most importantly, I love the experience of being there.

Where do you find inspiration?

I constantly look at what is out there. I love the juxtaposition of fashion and photojournalism. I look at the latest trends in fashion photography and keep myself visually stimulated by studying great photography masters. I particularly love the classic beauty of the 50s and 60s. I take the style and make it contemporary. If you look at my iPhone, you will see I always keep these images close to me.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing?

There is absolutely a sense of architect and design in me. I have built my own house, my cabin, and designed several pieces of furniture to go in each. A couple years ago I attended a workshop in Maine where I learned how to build a proper stone wall. Subsequently, I have built many stone walls and fireplaces for friends- including Christian!

What is your most memorable New York moment?

It would have to be the first time I saw snow in New York. Yes, that was me running around and dancing in the snow down 5th avenue. I think everyone thought I was crazy.

Photographer Spotlight: Sue Kessler

written by: Tyler Sutherland

You have seen her most recent work in her stunning new portfolio released yesterday, now we have Sue Kessler in the hot seat. Lights, camera, action!

 - Christian Oth of Christian Oth StudioHometown: Cleveland, OH

Years in NYC: 12

Outside of Christian Oth Studio, how do you spend your free time?

I run an Obie award-winning theater in Brooklyn. I photograph performers around the City. I travel. But mostly, I chase after my eight month old daughter, Willa!

When did you begin to have an interest in photography?

I got my first camera when I was about 10 years old- a film camera, of course. I remember instantly falling in love with the feeling of independence the camera granted me. The idea that I could go off alone and explore places, things, and people from my own point of view was a big part of my maturation as an artist and individual. Taking pictures introduced me to a sense of freedom and self-expression that I still try to cultivate through my work. I was lucky to discover photography at such a young age.

What is the most important thing you bring to a shoot besides your camera?

I bring a good attitude. I think it is so important to be good-natured, calm, focused, and generally full of positive vibes when photographing subjects. I am a very easy-going person, which has always served me well during shoots because everyone can just be themselves and have fun. I am able to roll with the punches, make the most of challenges, and find the art in any moment.

What is your favorite moment to shoot in a wedding?

The bride getting ready is one of my favorite times. There is so much anticipation in the air. She is with all the important women in her life- everyone is looking fresh, feeling excited, and emotional. It is a very dynamic time for me as a photographer because I can grab a mix of detail shots, special moments like mom surprising her daughter with a family heirloom to wear, and gorgeous glamorous pictures of the bride.

If you could pick anywhere, where would be your favorite place to shoot?

Definitely backstage at the fashion shows in Paris and Milan. My background is in performance photography and portraiture, but they go hand in hand with the drama of a runway show. Movement, lights, music, personalities, always an element of surprise, and the visceral energy of a live presentation. To me- a photographer's dream!

Where do you find inspiration?

I am most inspired by editorial images from the 1940's and 1950's. Avedon's fashion photographs from Vogue, Lillian Bassman's romantic black and whites from Harper's Bazaar, and the iconic photos in Life Magazine from that era. I love pictures that are timeless, yet bursting with expression. I also take inspiration every day from New York City itself for those same reasons.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing?

I think I'd be an Art Director.

What is your most memorable New York moment?

There are so many. I was here on 9/11, which was of course memorable to say the least. But the most powerful New York City moment, I have to say, was when I was visiting here as a kid. My family came for a long weekend when I was about 12 years old. I had never been to a big city, having grown up in the suburbs in Ohio, and we flew in to NYC on a dark and rainy day. We were rushed into a cab, and my sister and I were smushed between my parents in the back seat, so I could not really see out the windows as we approached the city. We were staying at the Ritz Carlton in midtown, and when we got out of the cab, I was completely awestruck. I could not believe the enormity of the city surrounding me. Madness, beauty, noise, the incredible energy that lives in the city streets- all the classic things that make the tourists stop and stare. Well, they got to me too. My mom quotes this moment to this day- I turned to her, stunned, and said, "Mom, this is where I am going to live someday." I still get chills when I remember how I felt in that moment.

Carolyn Monastra is back!

written by: Tyler Sutherland

We are happy to have Carolyn back from her travels abroad!

by Christian Oth of Christian Oth Studio
While we missed her at the studio, we knew she was traveling the world working on a project of her own- The Witness Tree.

For those of you who do not know where she disappeared to, she spent the last nine months traveling to different countries to embrace a passion. A passion that has allowed her to do amazing things. The objective of her study is to show how landscapes are affected by climate change, all documented in her blog. You can access this blog from the link above. Note: More posts to come. Not all travels are recorded, so check back for updates!

"What is a Witness Tree, you may ask?" says Carolyn

"By tradition, a witness tree is used in land surveying to mark a property corner that cannot be reached because it lies off a cliff or in a body of water. The term also refers to trees that have witnessed historic events; i.e. an old honey locust that existed during the battle of Gettysburg. I know I will be photographing many trees that are observing the changes in the land around them. In essence, my eyes and my camera will also act as witnesses and the resulting pictures will serve as permanent documents of these precious and precarious environments that are being affected by climate change."

A stunning landscape full of wildlife, a favorite place Carolyn visited was Antarctica-The Great White South. Definitely a post you want to read. A neat fact we learned is that 90% of the world's ice and 70% of the world's fresh water is contained in Antarctica.

Below are a few pictures she shared.

 - Carolyn Monastra of Christian Oth Studio

Although Carolyn had an amazing journey, one of the first things she said when back at the Studio was how she thought about wedding photography even when she was away- evident in this gorgeous image she took in Beijing of a bride and groom being photographed at the Forbidden Palace Gardens.

A Charming Martha's Vineyard Wedding Sneak Peek

written by: Sarah Graham

Over this past summer, we were able to enjoy the sites and sounds of one of our favorite destination wedding locations, Martha's Vineyard. We were asked to capture both the Lobster Lovin' rehearsal dinner as well as the Lavender Infused wedding ceremony the following day. Both will be featured tomorrow on Style Me Pretty's main blog - with the cooler than cool rehearsal dinner featuring on the Massachusett's blog.

But for now, we can leave you with this adorable little sneak peek of the day. The dress, the hands on the hips, the chalkboard table list? We absolutely adore it!

Introducing... Guy Calaf

written by: Christian Oth
We’re so excited to announce the newest addition to our growing roster of lead photographers --
Guy Calaf.  Guy’s talent for capturing rare and emotive images as a second shooter caught our attention and we touted him to be the team's newest emerging photographer.
Christian_oth_studio_110813bacmic0153

Guy comes to us with amazing credentials in the realm of photojournalism, and is by no means an emerging talent in his field.  An award-winning photographer, he has documented conflict in war zones, been embraced by the fashion world for his work for Vanity Fair and Marie Claire, and been lauded by the art community for his fine art photography.

Guy brings to the world of wedding photography a deep interest in human relationships, an ability to see beauty in unexpected places, and a personal warmth that encourages people to feel at ease.

“The personal connection is key to my work.  Being honored to document such a beautiful and important moment as a wedding, gives me the drive to produce work that is constructed by the emotional power of the couple.  My work goes beyond photography; it is an eternal visual representation of love”.

We're so thrilled to introduce Guy and share his talents with everyone!

New Studio Update - First Look

written by: Christian Oth
Here is a first look at the new studio space in the Flatiron District. So far the walls were demolished but tomorrow I expect they will be patched and painted.

There are still many, many items on the checklist; we're just getting started. By next week, we'll have the floors sanded and finished before we can begin with the construction of the drywall. No worries - the space will be pretty open.

Thanks to Yaiza, my architect, the project is in good hands and I love her ideas for the space. With that said, the all important question is... If this were your studio space, what would you do to it?

New Studio Coming Soon!

written by: Christian Oth
You may have noticed that I have been posting very little on the blog in the recent weeks. Well, along with doing lots of shoots I have been working on finalizing a commercial lease for a new studio space in New York's Flatiron district.

For over a year, I have been on the lookout for a great space that is in the right area of town and is also large enough to accommodate the growing needs of the studio. I finally found such a space and last week signed the lease.

Newstudio

The New York realtors have a funny term for a rectangular space like this one: "Vanilla Box". This means that pretty much we'll get a rectangle with 4 walls and some windows in it. The above drawing doesn't do it justice, but the new space is pretty incredible and will be large enough to house the team as well as operate a photo studio. We're all very excited about it.

More about it in the coming days.

Congratulations NY!!! Same Sex New York Marriage Bill passes

written by: Christian Oth
What an incredible time for gay New Yorkers! Today I am proud to be calling this state my home! We are all incredibly moved by the same sex marriage bill that passed in the senate last night. Thank you governor Cuomo for delivering on a campaign promise! And, the four republican senators that made it possible for the bill to pass.

What a remarkable victory for the gay community that started their gay rights movement right here in the city at Stonewall.

The new light field camera

written by: Christian Oth
The news of this new camera technology reached me over and over again today. Seems like every photographer seems incredibly excited by this new technology: A camera that lets you select focus after the fact.

This is nothing short of remarkable! If you know any photographer, especially those who shoot photojournalism you'll know that a camera's focus is probably one of the most challenging issues. This is quite a deep subject, that we all discuss a lot.

The Wall Street Journal says that "(it) will bring the biggest change to photography since the transition from film to digital". They might be right.

This really changes things.

Lytro, the company behind this new technology say that they will deliver a consumer camera later this year. Go to their website and reserve your spot now.

Introducing Glen Allsop

written by: Christian Oth

It's my pleasure to introduce Glen Allsop. He is our newest photographer at the studio.

I met Glen last year and was so impressed with his work that I asked him to come shoot for us. A few of our clients already had the pleasure to meet him and see his work in action. He has photographed over 100 weddings in Australia and shot several in the USA. In fact, many of his clients loved his work so much that they flew him from Australia to the US. Not bad, if you think about the photography talent that we have here in the first place.

So, I am very fortunate to announce Glen as the newest member of our team.

His work has been seen in Bride to Be Magazine, Real Weddings Magazine, Woman's Day among others as well as on many blogs.

Also ProPhoto Magazine (Australia) recently did a cover feature on Glen.

Ric Ocasek shoot for the New York Times Magazine

written by: Christian Oth

Every now and then I get to shoot some cool celebrities. Last week I shot Ric Ocasek from the Cars for the New York Times Magazine. The shoot took place during a break of the rehearsals at the Gibson Showroom in Midtown. Ric was very calm and professional and a genuinely nice person to work with. He made my job really easy as he had done so many shoots in his career.

There are many charity organizations that help the unfortunate and one that we support here at the studio is Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors without Borders.

The constant effort by Doctors without Borders to be in disaster areas and conflict zones in over 60 countries is a cause worth supporting. These doctors go where nobody else goes and are very quick to get there. Event though Japan is a wealthy country and seems to be in a much better position to help itself, Doctors without Borders has sent medical teams to support the earthquake and tsunami response in Japan. Their teams are running mobile clinics and are conducting needs assessments at this point.

For this reason we'd like to hold a fundraiser here a the studio by offering a portrait shoot. Our photographers will donate their time. 100 % of your donations will go to Doctors Without Borders/Medicins Sans Frontieres

Rent the Runway

written by: Christian Oth

The concept is simple and brilliant--beautiful dresses at a fraction of the price: Rent the dress instead of owning it. If you haven't heard about it yet, let me be the harbinger of good news: RentTheRunway has arrived!!!

Recently I shot a wedding at Ellis Island that was a top-knotch event. Senators, even our own governor were there. Yet in the hallways I could hear how women rented the dress for the evening instead of owning it. I wish we had something like this for us guys  (tuxedo rentals notwithstanding)

Anyhow, Shawn and I shot their latest campaign which can be seen on the new  RentTheRunwayWeddings site. Please register!

The New York Public Library 100 Year Anniversary Gala

written by: Christian Oth

Last night marked the 100th anniversary of the New York Public Library, and to celebrate this monumental landmark event, they hosted a resplendent gala. Our studio was asked to be the exclusive photographers for the evening, and we were absolutely thrilled to accept.  We have had the pleasure of photographing numerous weddings and events at the New York Public Library throughout the years, and its classic gracefulness and grandeur makes it one of our favorite iconic New York places.

To add to the historic nature of the event and kick off the party, a classic jazz band in full flapper-era attire serenaded guests with upbeat melodies.  Giant candelabras lit the room, while literature and the constellations were projected onto the ceiling.  An original mock up of the building, which opened to the public in 1911, sat front and center.  The event was catered by Peter Callahan, one of New York’s finest chefs, and guests enjoyed everything from tuna tartare to sweet desserts served in champagne glasses.  The food was artfully presented and appealed to all the senses--a perfect presentation.  As the evening wound down, we reflected on the success of the party in honoring what was truly an historic occasion.

I hope you enjoy the photographs from this wonderful event.

I hope you all had a very happy new year!  2011 is shaping up to be a great year for the studio already--the talented editors over at Martha Stewart selected this beautiful wedding shot by Shawn Connell for a feature in their winter weddings issue.  We are so honored and excited to see the photographs in the magazine, and of course we would like to thank Eric and Angela (the bride and groom) for letting us share their beautiful celebration below.  I hope you enjoy the feature, and stay tuned for even more photographs of this wedding tomorrow.

Happy Holidays!

written by: Christian Oth

Happy holidays from all of us at Christian Oth Studio! Whew, what a year it has been... we started off with an all new site, added a blog and had some truly amazing weddings to share. Well there are quite a few more to come in 2011 - we will have lots of destination weddings and some truly amazing New York affairs too.

The studio will be closed for the holidays and we will be taking some much-deserved time off to relax and enjoy friends and family.  We'll be back in early January, so until then we wish you a peaceful holiday and a happy new year!

Das Racist

written by: Christian Oth

Christianothstudio_dasracist0002Christianothstudio_dasracist0001

Recently I photographed "Das Racist", a Brooklyn indie-rap group, for the New York Times Magazine (click here for the full interview).  Initially I wasn’t very familiar with their music, but Himanshu Suri (in the red and white jacket) and Victor Vazquez were relaxed and extremely comfortable in front of the camera and I love how their personalities came out in the photos.  Immediately after arriving they dismantled a bouquet of flowers to use playfully as props.  After that we just had fun--they were not afraid to joke around in front of the camera, which resulted in some really great shots.  I hope you enjoy these extra takes from the shoot.

The Great Melinda Gates

written by: Christian Oth

I recently got the opportunity to photograph the lovely Melinda Gates for the New York Times Magazine (click here to read the full interview), and want to share some extra shots and a behind-the-scenes photograph from our shoot with you.  I was not surprised to discover that Melinda was both kind and incredibly eloquent, traits that have served her well as a philanthropist (she is co-founder and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).  A rigorous schedule necessitated that Deborah Solomon from the magazine ask questions over my shoulder while I photographed Melinda, and at one point, Deborah noted “Everybody wants something from you...”.  I volunteered that all I wanted from her was a great photograph, and Melinda’s gracious response was “That’s all right with me”.  She was elegant and poised throughout the shoot, but I found out that there is one thing she does not tolerate...Apple products in their home!  I asked if she would allow her children to have iPods and iPhones, and the answer was a resolute “No”.  I enjoyed photographing and talking with Melinda Gates, and her kindness and generosity in person was truly inspiring.  I hope you enjoy the photographs from our shoot below.

The Knot Gala

written by: Christian Oth

It’s bridal market week here in New York, and the new collections have been just cause for celebration, with parties taking place all around town.  Monday night’s gala thrown by The Knot was by far the highlight of the week.  Carley Roney, the talented Co-Founder and Editor-In-Chief of The Knot, presided over the festivities with grace and style.  She contacted our studio to take pictures of the event, which took place at the beautiful New York Public Library.  It was an amazing night, with all of the major wedding celebrities in attendance.  The centerpiece-de-resistance was a towering wedding gown made entirely from white and pink flowers by Preston Bailey.  I hope you enjoy the photographs below of this truly magical evening.

A Moment With Phil Collins

written by: Christian Oth

Recently I photographed Phil Collins for an editorial assignment and I would like to share these images with you.

_g1z0108_g1z0112

I met the legendary Grammy Award-Winner at the Atlantic Records headquarters in Midtown Manhattan.  I just love it when I am able to photograph someone whose music I started listening to as a teenager, and still enjoy today.  We met in the Atlantic Records art bay for the shoot, and it was inspiring to be in the presence of such great works of art with someone as creative and innovative in his own right.  Phil fit in perfectly with the setting, and was a genuinely cool guy to work with.   During the shoot, we talked about each of our young sons, who are roughly the same age.  It was an honor to photograph someone whom I admire, and it was even more refreshing to see how down-to-earth he is.

_g1z0099

While we were in one of the staff meeting rooms, I discovered this pin board and it turned out to be the perfect backdrop for our shoot.  Sometimes finding unexpected elements in the environment can lead to great photographs, and this pin board was just the right color and texture so I went with it. I hope you enjoy these portraits of Phil Collins from our shoot.

Fashion Week

written by: Christian Oth

Fashion Week is officially underway here in New York, and the city streets have come alive with well-heeled editors, models and celebrities in sky-high Louboutins.  Every spring and fall the excitement begins to build as the big white tents go up, but this season fashion week is trading in it’s long-standing home in Bryant Park for the stately plazas at Lincoln Center.  The Upper West Side is abuzz with crowds entering and exiting shows, and it’s everyone for themselves when it comes to catching a cab.  During fashion week, designers set the trends for the next season with the clothes they send down the runway, but often the show’s attendees are sources for inspiration with their personal sense of style as well.

Fashion Week brings creative energy and talent to the city, and it inspired us to think about bridal style.  We photograph so many chic, stylish brides that are trend-setters in their own right, so in honor of Fashion Week, we thought it only fair to showcase some of the amazing and unique wedding gowns our brides have selected.  From fun floral details, to gowns that play with volume or texture, or even gowns that are not the traditional wedding white, these brides have shown a sense of style and creativity that puts them ahead of the trends.  Here are some of our favorites--take a look and tell us which style you like best.

Happy Labor Day Weekend

written by: Christian Oth

I hope you all have plans to spend your Labor Day Weekend soaking up the sun at a family barbecue or on a beach somewhere.  Summer holiday weekends are a great time to get fun photographs of your friends and family.  One thing to keep in mind is that a little shade goes a long way when you’re taking photographs in the mid-day sun.  The best time of day to capture great pictures of your loved ones is late afternoon, when the sun isn’t directly overhead.  If a noontime celebration is on your schedule, look for a leafy tree or a cheerful beach umbrella to shed some shade on faces and provide relief from the harsh sun.

Say Hello to Molly

written by: Christian Oth

I started this blog early this year to create a forum where brides, grooms and photographers alike could communicate with our studio and one another.  I casually tested the waters by sharing my philosophy and standards for wedding photography, and I got some great comments, questions and suggestions from those of you that follow our blog.  Recently, I’ve decided to step up our efforts and become more active with our blog posts, so I am very happy to introduce Molly Dembner as a new addition to our team.

Molly is now interviewing our brides and creating the Real Weddings posts on this site.  She has some expertise in this area, as she was one of our real brides just last year!  Sue Kessler from our studio photographed her elegant wedding in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and the photographs turned out beautifully.  Molly kept in touch with the studio and I ran into her out and about several times in New York, so she naturally popped into my mind when I decided to increase our blogging efforts.  She recently moved to San Francisco for her husband Joey’s job at Apple Inc., so west coast brides, keep an eye out for her around the city!

A warm welcome to Molly.

Getting Creative: A Discussion of Portraits

written by: Christian Oth

In our creative meeting at the studio yesterday, we focused on new and different ways of photographing portraits during weddings.  We talked about how we could make them fun and unique while still delivering the traditional idea of a posed portrait.

I shared one of our previous creative meetings with you because I think it is important for our clients and other photographers alike to see what our creative process here at the studio is, and how we are able to stay innovative as a team.  This time around, we took a look at some great examples of portraits at recent weddings and discussed what techniques we had used to capture all of the essential actors while still maintaining our creative photojournalistic approach.  Everyone at the studio is incredibly talented and passionate about what they do, so we love getting together and sharing new techniques that we have discovered.  For those of you out there who are just as passionate as we are, I have included some of the portrait techniques that we discussed below.
090228levmel0886

SHOW THE LOCATION

One of the ways to make a posed portrait visually interesting is by including an element of the location that makes it distinct in the background of the photograph.  For example, if the wedding is located in Connecticut, the photographer could include a white picket horse coral in the background to give the actors (bride and groom, family members, wedding party) a setting for their story.  Additionally, making that background slightly out of focus gives the photograph beautiful contrast and texture and draws attention to the people in the portrait.

Props can also be used for a similar effect.  At a wedding that we shot on a farm in upstate New York, there was a beautifully weathered old tractor on the grounds, so we had the bride, groom and family members sit on or stand alongside the tractor in one of their portraits.  The tractorgave the people in the portrait a sense of place without creating a distraction.

0005_090905jonhea0226

MIND THE EDGE

As photojournalists, we always try to take beautiful photographs using creative framing, but it’s important when taking portrait photographs to make sure that all of the key participants are fully in the frame.  When it comes down to it, the photographs of friends, family members and the wedding party are often the most important to the bride and groom.  It’s important to us that we have great communication before the wedding with the couple to make sure we know who all of their family members are and which shots are important to them.  Using the right techniques and coordinating with the couple to make sure we have captured all of the key participants can lead to stunning, naturally beautiful photographs.
0001_100515liealy0063

PAY ATTENTION TO PERSPECTIVE

Sometimes there are parts of the background that are not visually appealing and should be excluded if possible.  By paying attention to perspective, you can focus on your subjects while excluding elements of the background.  For instance, if you are shooting a couple and want to capture the beautiful foliage above them but don’t want to include the traffic behind them at ground level, you could shoot from a lower perspective, so that only the foliage is in the background of the portrait.  Getting close to the people in the portrait and only including a hint of the foliage behind them is another way to do this.

Similarly, if you are shooting portraits of a couple in an expansive space and want to show them in their environment, a higher perspective taken from a distance and using a longer lens can create beautiful depth to the portrait and draw the focus to the couple.

We chose to talk about portraits this week because they are an essential part of wedding photography, and when they are created thoughtfully, they can be just as innovative and unique as some of the candid moments.  Feel free to share your thoughts with us below.

If you recall a few weeks back, in preparation for our new website release; we had a blog posting of some of our photography team doing their headshots.  Well, here is the other half of our team having a go.  Carolyn, Sue, and Alison approached this shoot with a fun and fancy-free attitude.

The Other Side of the Camera

written by: Christian Oth

Meatpacking District and Highline Park

Out with photographers Michael Falco and Shawn Connell we happened to catch some candid moments while taking some new head shots.  Being in front of the camera can be a truly vulnerable time.  It's a feeling of being exposed, to which not even photographers are fully immune.  Just out for these shots it makes me appreciate the importance of having a great photographer who put you at ease.

The Studio

written by: Christian Oth

We love our space on 7th Avenue  in New York's Fashion District!

Our studio is very central and we do all our client meetings here as well as photo shoots. All the other magic, post processing and book design happens here.

It also doesn't hurt that 28th Street, which is New York's flower district, is right around the corner. Our studio manager loves to always get new flowers for the studio.

We've been here for over 5 years and have really grown into it. This image was taken recently for the website for our new "About Us" section.

I always knew that Alison was an incredible photographer. One only has to watch her work! This is such a great and unusual picture.

This is now the second PDN cover that we got in our little studio collective. For those of you who are not photographers, you probably don't know Photo District News (PDN), but it's what photographers look at.

Congratulations, Alison!

This is the second time that we got the cover for the PDN annual wedding issue. See the 2006 cover here .

Keeping up with technology

written by: Christian Oth

Apple's forthcoming release of the iPad will bring another game changer to the way we view and consume media. As a photographer I am very excited about the new possibilities this handsome new device will bring.

Photographers are inherently interested in technology. When digital cameras came of age I was all about them and mastering all the technical implications of it. What a wonderful combination of technology and photography.

Enter 2010 and Web 2.0 or whatever you may call it. For the past 7 months we have been working on getting our new website off the ground. Even before Apple announced the iPad we wisely decided to create the site in Html5 and have not one bit of Adobe Flash in it. The fruits of this endeavor are now on display in the new iPad.

Iphone-simulator-6-1c

The above is a screenshot we took in the iPad simulator. We have one on order at the studio and can't wait to see the real thing.

UPDATE: I was just informed that we still have Flash on the site: we had to use it for the music. We're still looking for alternatives on that end.

We were very precise when handpicking each of the vendors making sure each and everyone met our quality standards. We love partnering up with these companies/people and respect their work. To meet all of our standards one must deliver top-notch work, BUT also be a pleasure to work with.  I invite you to stroll over to the listings and see for yourself, whether you're window shopping or in desperate need for some yummy wedding cake.

The much anticipated Whitney Biennial opens today to the public

written by: Christian Oth

The much anticipated Whitney Biennial opens today to the public. This exhibit highlights lesser known artists that are expected to set the temperature for the next two years in the contemporary art world. This year there are 55 artists showing, 4 of which are photographers, I am especially excited to see the youngest photographer (23) Tam Tran’s work.

While Biennials are always affected by the cultural, political, and social moment, this exhibition simply titled "2010” embodies a cross section of contemporary art production rather than a specific theme.

Oh brother, there!

written by: Christian Oth

Our new website has been live for a little over 2 weeks now, and what a busy couple of weeks it has been. To put it mildly it's been raved about by many in the industry and clients alike so far. This project started last August and everyone involved in it thought we'd get this out in about 6 weeks. How wrong we were.

The primary obstacle was to improve on a site that already scored highly on aesthetics. I pretty much told my web developers to do most of the same that my old site did. There was definitely some head-butting and there were at least two occasions when I picked up the phone and wanted to call the entire project off only to change my mind during the conversation, because of the charisma and intelligence of .... my brother!

Yes, the web developer behind all of this IS my brother Roland. He is running a startup company in Austria doing all sorts of geeky internet backbone stuff (quite brilliantly so). When he decided to take on this project he collaborated with the graphic designers from Abloom with whom he shares his office. We were truly telecommuting: Skype video and Google Waving. However, oddly enough, we got the bulk done during a ski trip in Austria.

So here it is. The new site. Roland: thank you so much for all the work and hours you put into it. I couldn't be happier and more proud that we worked on this together! Bro, you rock!

Announcing an all new website!

written by: Christian Oth

The last time we re-designed our website was only 18 months ago, but we felt like we had to stay current with today's communication needs. First and foremost we wanted to add a blog. Then we realized that our photographer's work needed to be featured in a better way - so one thing led to another... and voilà a new website is born.

The new site not only features gorgeous weddings, but it's also a dynamic resource about photography, and more. Register with the site, and you can enjoy and share our new "Favorites" feature -- our one-of-a-kind tool that will be useful to many, as we continue to bring more stunning images to our site. "Star" any image to create custom slideshows that you can share with your friends, use as inspiration as you plan your big day, and help guide you as you choose a photographer. For fans and journalists, you can follow the evolving talents and style of our photographers.

Having been in this industry for a number of years we thought that we had something valuable to share with couples planning their wedding. We have been so privileged to work with many talented and distinguished vendors -- planners, designers, florists, make-up artists and musicians. We have also shot at the top venues in NYC and across the globe for a bevy of unique clients. If you find a resource on this site, you can trust that it's a good one - useful, tasteful and helpful.

New functionalities and resources will evolve over time. Bookmark our page as a valuable, concise and easy-to-use resource. No clutter, I promise.
