5 Things to Look for in a Photographer
Since wedding photography has a low barrier of entry and there are literally thousands of photographers in a single market—how do you know what to look for? Especially if you don’t want run-of-the-mill photography with basic, copied poses and lighting tricks you see over and over again?
If you’re looking for a wedding album that feels more editorial, look for these 5 things in your photographer.
1) A photographer who is more than weddings
Look for photographers who think and breathe photography in other disciplines too.
2) An entire wedding that’s photographed well
Make sure you look through an entire wedding album from start to finish, and make sure it’s photographed well. A fashion photographer may have great magazine-worthy shots, but may miss the in-between, candid moments. A Reuters news photographer may get the moments, but may be missing great portrait photos. Analyze that portfolio!
Look for a photographer with a positive, can-do attitude who listens to you and understands what you’re looking for. A personal interview will determine if you have chemistry and don’t underestimate the importance of chemistry! Your wedding photographer will be by your side almost the entire wedding day.
Word-of-mouth is a strong indicator especially if you hear from multiple sources that he/she does a great job.
Check the availability of photographers you have in mind and we recommend booking early! The best photographers are booked up fast—often times 1 year + in advance. You don’t want to have to change your wedding date to book a certain photographer (Yes, this has happened before!)
At the studio we hire only photographers who have had some type of non-wedding exposure. Our studio photographers are published, fashion photographers, photojournalists and fine art photographers who often have exhibitions. Just like Shawn Connell who is pictured above. Shawn is hands-down one of the top photographers. He’s an example of a photographer who hits all five bullet points above!
